VIC:Desal workers get temporary reprieve

About 160 electricians facing the sack at Victoria's desalination plant have been given
a temporary reprieve following a Federal Court decision.

Justice RICHARD TRACEY has today ordered contractor Thiess Degremont and the Electrical
Trades Union to hold talks under the company's dispute resolution agreement to resolve
the impasse.

If the talks fail, the parties could be headed to Fair Work Australia for a ruling.

Thiess argues that it needs to sack 160 workers because they can't be accommodated
under a 56-hour weekly roster.

The company says its disappointed with the court's decision but the union's welcomed
the decision as logical and fair.
