WA: Record number of candidates to bid for WA parliament

PERTH, Jan 19 AAP - A record number of candidates will contest the 54 seats in the
West Australian lower house at next month's state election.

At 3pm (WST), just hours before the official close of nominations, 342 candidates had
registered for the legislative assembly - 110 more than for the last poll four years ago.

The upper house has 151 contenders - up from 129 in 1996 - for a possible 34 places,
according to the WA Electoral Commission.
